If any damage occurs while they have it, you get to pay for the repairs. Then when you get to your destination airport, you still need to deal with it to get it to your hotel or other destination.
How much easier to have it professionally packed and shipped via UPS. They insure it with better coverage than the airlines, and they get a signature at the destination. They can also track it, and tell you where it is at any time. You could ship it round trip to California for about the same cost as one way on the airplane.
I can send it to a shop at your destination, and you could have it re-assembled there, they can store your shipping container for you and they could ship it back for you.
Another option is to have it sent to the concierge at your destination hotel. The hotel can handle the return shipping for you too.
